David Jones
Haida artist David Jones was born in Masset, Haida Gwaii in 1991 and grew up in Hydaburg, Alaska. His parents are Norman and Sophina Edenshaw (Jones). Paternal Grandparents are Kaigani Haidas, Gerald Edenshaw and Jean Bland. Maternal, Grandparents from Haida Gwaii are Marina and David jones Sr. David’s clan is, Naikun Qegawai. David first became interested in Haida art when he was nine years old. He spent his time studying books about Haida art and through this, learned formline by mimicking the designs in these books. He later went on to develop his own style of artwork. In 2013, David apprenticed for Haida master carver, Reggie Davidson for a period of time working on wood projects down at Reggie’s carving shop. In 2014, he started carving on precious metals such as gold, sterling silver, and copper with Haida master carver, Derek white. In the summer of 2021 David started as an apprentice for master carver Christian White at his carving shed in old Masset.
