Artist Of The Week- Raven Ryland

Gaad Gas, Raven Ryland was born in Hazleton BC and grew up in Gamadiis Port Clements on Haida Gwaii. Raven is from the Yahgulanaas clan. She is learning the Haida language. Raven  has learned cedar weaving from Jiixa Gladys Vandal and her mom Tammi Ryland as well as her grandmother Dawn Ryland. Raven has learned ravens tail weaving from Skidegate weaver Aay Aay Albert Hans. Raven began weaving cedar when she was 9 with Grandmother Dawn Ryland and great grandmother Eliza Abrahams. She continues to learn and hone her craft.

Artist of the Week- Clayton Gladstone

Clayton Gladstone (Gaa Alaa)

Clayton Gladstone is based out of Skidegate on Haida Gwaii, and is a member of the Tsaahl Eagle clan. His grandfather was Haida artist Charles Gladstone. Clayton has been carving since 1977, he spent his early years with many teachers most notably Bill Reid. Claytons preferred mediums are precious metals, wood, leather, paint and textiles. His style emulates the old classical Skidegate Haida masters with his own design. Clayton feels the supernaturals left an awesome legacy and they are there to show us the way.

Garner Moody Skidegate

Clan: Gaagyals KiiGawaay of Skedans (Raven)

Garner was born in Prince Super but adopted by Lloyd and Muriel Moody of Skidegate which makes him the nephew of Esteemed artist Rufus Moody. He grew up in Skidegate and started carving at the age of 9, eventually working under artists such as Alfred Collison, Rufus Moody, Giitsxaa (Ron Wilson),Nelson Cross, Ding (Melvin) Hutchingson and Bill Reid. Garner works in various mediums including gold, silver, argillite,cedar and paper. Garner Moody along with Anthony Greene and Billy Bellis, carved the Ts'aahl Pole that in now outside the Haida Heritage Center. Garner has developed his own distinctive style through constancy in the execution of the Haida formaline.
