Aay Aay Gidins

Aay Aay Gidins belongs to the Gidins Eagle clan of Haida Gwaii. In 2008, he learned Naaxiin (Chilkat weaving) from Evelyn Vanderhoop and 2013. In 2014 he completed advanced Naaxin weaving. Aay Aay is also an incredible jeweller who learned techniques from the late Val Malesku and sister Wendy.  As well as his Naaxin weaving, Aay Aay has a unique style that uses silver & copper castings, abalone with silver & copper cut-out designs as well as an incredible wax technique for making tiny linen baskets worn as earrings.

From 2025 -March 2026, Aay Aay held an amazing show of his works at the Haida Gwaii Museum entitled The Weaving of Aay Aay - k’uuga kiljuu t’aa guudadall Walks Lightly With a Big Heart. It featured Aay Aay’s Raven’s Tail weaving work over the years. At the opening event Aay Aay gracefully presented robe to his teacher and mentor Evelyn Vanderhoop,
