Artist - Michael Kolankowski – Captain of MV Northern Pursuit

Is recognized for a unique blend of analytical insight and creative vision, contributing to a variety of innovative artistic pursuits. With an aptitude for problem-solving and an eagerness for creativity, Captain Mike consistently seeks out new challenges that foster artistic growth while creating objects that are transformed from their natural state into long lasting works of art.

Born and raised last Century in Calgary, Alberta, Captain Mike relocated to Haida Gwaii in 2016 after years of scouring the West Coast of Canada for “a place with inspiring qualities”. Exploring the Pacific Northwest by boat for over 15 years, Haida Gwaii appeared out of the mist and became home.

Delving into what Nature supplies, combined with local history, Captain Mike offers a new spin on traditional trades.

Wood turning combined with resin and live edge produces exquisite bowls, platters, and vases.

Forging ahead into knife making, Captain Mike blends copper, brass, and other metals salvaged from wrecked boats, discarded logging machinery, and other local sources with modern knife steels to create Damascus blades. Handles are made from local cedar, alder, horn, and yew. Some are inlaid with metals and gemstones adding to the beauty and function of these artfully crafted pieces.

Continuously exploring the rugged Shores of Haida Gwaii, Nature has given Captain Mike one more jewel. The Eye Agate. Nearly impossible to locate and procure, these tiny stones, believed to bring good luck, are beautiful and unique. Each an intricate history of the formation of our planet, they are carefully extricated and go through several stages of refinement to create beautifully finished gems. No matter how they are worn or displayed, these precious Eye Agates are sure to turn heads!
